From Bihar to the World: Sonu Kumar Sah’s Global Journey in Teaching Yoga

Let me introduce you to Sonu Kumar Sah, a lead yoga instructor at Shivalaya Yoga Ashram and an inspiring guru who has changed the vision of many students.

Throughout his journey he has achieved many recognition globally and taught many students from different countries.

So let’s deep dive into the global journey of Sonu Kumar Sah, exploring his academic achievements, experiences, and more.

How it Started: Early Days

Sonu started his professional journey as a computer science engineer and fully dedicated his mind into technology and IT modernization. However, somewhere between his academic study he realized that true happiness did not lie in coding or technology.

This inner calling changed the way he thinks about life completely and made a bold move towards exploring the ancient science of yoga. From this point the real and meaningful journey of yoga begins.

The Beginning of Yoga Science: SVYASA University

To follow a completely new path of yoga, Sonu’s journey started at the very prestigious and renowned Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (SVYASA) University in Bengaluru, India. He started the learning by enrolling in Yoga Instructor Course (YIC) a one month beginners program that laid the foundation of spiritual journey. The course helped Sonu gain a basic and deeper understanding of yoga philosophy, meditation, asanas, pranayamas, and more.

After completion of the YIC course he found it very interesting and later he cleared the entrance examination and was admitted into full-time bachelor of science in yoga therapy program at SVYASA University. The three year course transformed him not only professionally but also personally.

Additionally he holds the Level-3 Certification from the Yoga Certification Board (YCB), under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India

Theory, Practice, and Therapy Training

During the training period at Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana University, he immersed himself in various types of practices, theory and practice sessions.

Theoretical Knowledge: Developed knowledge in Patanjali yoga sutras, hatha yoga texts, scientific research-based yoga therapies, and many other subjects.

Practical Knowledge: Learnt the different types of asana practice and had been introduced to advanced levels of pranayama practices, guided meditation techniques, and yogic lifestyle.

Therapy Specialization: Specialism concerning therapeutic applications of yoga with musculoskeletal disorders, psychosomatic problems, and lifestyle disorders.

One of the best experiences during his degree was her internship at Aarogya Dhama, SVYASA’s yoga therapy hospital. As a trainee therapist, he helped out and watched real yoga therapy sessions for patients with different conditions, like diabetes and anxiety.

This hands-on experience gave him the confidence to see how yoga can heal in ways beyond just exercise.

From India to Singapore: The Teaching Journey

After completing the rigorous academic journey, Sonu stepped into the teaching profession. His first opportunity came from Ashish Yoga Fitness, Bengaluru, where he taught in a Yoga Teacher Training Course (YTTC) for around three months.

During the course he got hands-on experience on helping students from different backgrounds with asanas, pranayamas, meditation, and more. Here the teaching experience comes in handy where he sees his students transformed into a better yoga instructor.

Not long after, he got the great opportunity to teach yoga abroad so he moved to Singapore and was invited to teach a 2 months yoga teacher training course. This experience gave him global recognition and a chance to see how yoga is practiced around the world.

Coming Home – Shivalaya Yoga Ashram, Pokhara Nepal

This thought journey gave Sonu a handful of experiences in yoga. After coming back home he founded Shivalaya Yoga Ashram, residing in the peaceful surrounding of Begnas lake Pokhara Nepal.

Currently Sonu is the director as well as the lead yoga teacher of the ashram, where he teaches 50 Hour to 500 hour teacher training courses, retreats, workshops, and more. He blends the traditional yoga teaching with some latest teaching methods to adapt the needs of modern day practitioners.

At Shivalaya Ashram we do not just teach yoga, we live yoga. He considers yoga as a life mission to share the ancient wisdom with love and compassion.
